The Views of Rupert Brooke and Wil My selected poems are 'The Soldier' by Rupert Brooke and 'Dulce et Decorum est' by Wilfred Owen. Both war poems but conveying their different feelings and presenting their views of war in radically different ways. The poets have polarized views of war with Rupert Brooke writing his poem in a romanticized and patriotic way referring to the possibility of death as a noble cause, for England the land that gave him life. This is at odds to how Wilfred Owen views the reality and horror of war. The poets choice of title 'Dulce et Decorum est' which translated means 'It is lovely and honourable to die for your country' which in its self is irony, misleads you to think that the poem is going to be about how blissful it is to die for your country and how proud you should be, when the reality is so different. The title 'The Soldier' is also very misleading. The title suggests it's going to be about a solider at war and facing death when in fact it's about the glorification and pride or the author Brookes at the thought of serving his country. 'Dulce et decorum est' is a poem about Soldiers in 1st world war. The poet Wilfred Owen has created and described images in great detail. He creates the horrific images of war and the soldier's pain. The poem begins, 'Bent double. Like old beggars under sacks' Which instantly has great impact on my feelings and creates the image of the young soldier's hunched backed in pain and agony carrying enormous packs, walking slowly and haggard like old women. The pain that the soldiers are feeling is shown 'Knock-kneed, coughing like old hags, we cursed through sludge' implying that the soldiers were cold and afraid and feeling very ill... ...ormat to write a war poem in. Also it seems to me that as Rupert Brookes didn't fight in the war and lost his life to a measly mosquito bite, his poem is party deceptive and untruthful. I have come to the conclusion that both poets have polarized view on war. Wilfred Owen believed that war was a useless thing, risking young lives and seeing the pain that many of the men went through and Rupert Brookes saw war as a noble act. Bald eagles that reside in the northern USA and Canada migrate to the warmer southern areas duri ng the winter to obtain easier access to food.They feed primarily on fish, but also eat small animals such as ducks, rabbits, turtles, snakes, etc. Bald eagle population numbers have been estimated to be 300 000 to 500 000 birds in the early 1700s. Their population fell to less than 10 000 nesting pair by the 1950s, and to less than 500 pairs by the early 1960s. This population decline was caused by the mass shooting of eagles, the use of pesticides on crops, the destruction of habitat, and the contamination of waterways and food sources by a wide range of poisons and pollutants.For many years, the use of DTT pesticide crops caused thinning of eagle egg shells, which often broke during incubation. The use of DDT pesticide was outlawed in USA and Canada in 1972/73. This action contributed greatly to the return of the bald eagle. The Bald Eagle was listed as Endangered in most of the U. S. from 1967 to 1995, when it was slighted upgraded to Threatened in the lower 48 states. The numbe r of nesting pairs of Bald Eagles in the lower 48 states had increased from less than 500 in the early 1960's to over 10,000 in 2007.They had recovered sufficiently to delist them from Threatened status on June 28, 2007. Since delisting, the primary law protecting Bald Eagles has shifted from the Endangered Species Act to the Bald and Golden Eagle Act. Although Bald Eagles have made an encouraging comeback throughout the U. S. A. since the early 60s, they continue to be face hazards that must be closely monitored and controlled. It’s usually when an editor I’ve worked with (or worse, never worked with before) has asked for â€Å"fresh† ideas and I’ve racked my brain from here to eternity and come up empty. I hate the word â€Å"fresh.† Because the truth is, what my editors at women’s magazines want is not fresh. What they want is â€Å"evergreen† - another word I learned as a new writer that I’ve come to detest. How do you write a story that’s evergreen but fresh, and oh, has tips no one’s ever read before? Figure that out and the world of $2 per word markets suddenly opens up to you. Here’s how to make dull stories interesting, twist headlines to make cover lines that entice, and come up with ideas that make editors jump with joy. * Practice your copywriting skills: One of the best ways to take a stale, overdone idea and make it interesting is to think up a really clever headline. Copywriters know that they only have a few seconds to grab someone’s attention, so they spend hours crafting the perfect headline. This is exactly what you should be doing, too. Take your time coming up with a headline that will grab an editor’s attention immediately. Make her want to read your pitch and you have a sale. * Throw different and distinct ideas together: I like to come up with absolutely random subjects that, on the surface, have nothing to do with each other and brainstorm story ideas that use both. The basic theme of the story is the tangible and intangible items carried by the soldiers in Vietnam War and the effect they have on their personalities during the war. The story revolves around Lieutenant Cross, his feelings for his college crush and the death of fellow soldier Ted Lavender. Interestingly, the narrator of the story, O’Brien, who himself is a soldier of Alpha Company differentiates the other soldiers by the things which they carry. â€Å"They carried the sky. The whole atmosphere, they carried it, the humidity, the monsoons, the stink of fungus and decay, all of it, they carried gravity† (O'Brien 14). All the soldiers carry basic fighting supplies e.g. guns, ammunition and ponchos, which can be wrapped around their bodies if they die. However, more importantly, they carry many other personal items. In Army’s slang, carrying of goods by the soldiers is known as â€Å"humping†. According to O’Brien, all the soldiers hump many different things in order to satisfy their emotional bonds or feelings. One of the soldiers carries an illustrated edition of bible, another wears the stocking of his girlfriend around his neckline, yet another man carries a slingshot, another condoms and another some funny comic books. Alpha Company soldiers carry a host of physical items in Vietnam in order to ward off emotional liabilities. According to O’Brien, one such liability is the requirement of soldiers to deal with the apprehensions of reality and fantasy. The consciousness of this apprehension creates a lot of emotional problems for First Lieutenant Cross during his stay with the company. Cross believes that he was so preoccupied with the memories of his college crush Martha and the dreams of life they might spend after war that he had become negligent. â€Å"†¦.and Martha wor e a tweed skirt, and during the final scene, when he touched her knee†¦.† (O’Brien 4). He therefore, blames himself and his negligent attitude towards his men for the death of Ted Lavender’s, a low ranking soldier of the company. If the readers consider the story as a clash between war and love, then most certainly, the death of Ted Lavender and consequent cynicism of Lieutenant Cross suggest success of war in this clash. The story unfolds the doubts and gloominess that the war brings on the nature of the soldiers. Such gloominess and pessimism can be seen in the character of Cross who blames himself for the death of Ted Lavender. Prior to Ted’s death, Cross was completely engrossed in the memories of Martha and remains gripped by most petty matters e.g whether Martha is a virgin or why does she sign the letter with the word â€Å"Love†. However, after Ted’s death, when he decides that it was due to his preoccupation and distractions cau sed by the thoughts of Martha, he expresses his emotions and anger with the only possible manner; by burning the pictures and letters of Martha, in an endeavor to disassociate himself with the what he sees as the root cause of his negligence and a negative force. By the end of the story, Cross concludes that it is far better to be loved by someone than to lead troops in war, which shows exactly how war and the death of a subordinate had disturbed his mental balance. The emotional liabilities which the soldiers of Alpha Company face are magnified by their inexperience in war and young age.
